II SIIS – Information, Innovation and Society Seminar
The postgraduate programmes in Science, Technology and Society (PPGCTS) and Information Science (PPGCI) at the Federal University of São Carlos (Universidade Federal de São Carlos – UFSCar), Brazil, promote the second Information, Innovation and Society Seminar (II SIIS), online on the 19th October, 2020, to coincide with the 17th National Week of Science and Technology promoted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Communications and Innovation, on the theme “Artificial Intelligence: the new frontier of Brazilian science.”
The theme of the II SIIS is “Artificial Intelligence: dialogues with Information, Innovation and Society”, and we hope to create a space for the dissemination and articulation of scientific output arising from research in knowledge, technology and innovation in the national and international contexts of Information Science (CI) and Science, Technology and Society (CTS), taken as a broad field of study for the relationship between information and the evolutionary aspects of technology, in promoting innovation and its impact on the various segments of contemporary society.
Seminar Programme:
Date: 19th October
- 10h: Public Lecture: “What is the impact of Artificial Intelligence and data (open and linked) on Education?” (given in Portuguese). Qual o impacto da Inteligência Artificial e dos dados (abertos e conectados) na Educação? Prof. Dr. Seiji Isotani (Professor in Computing and Educational Technologies at the Institute Mathematical Sciences and Computation at the University of São Paulo (ICMC-USP). He has a Doctorate degree in Information Engineering from Osaka University (Japan), with a thesis in the area of Artificial Intelligence applied to Education and carried out post-doc research in Cognitive Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University (USA). He is co-founder of the Laboratory for Computing Applied to Education and Advanced Social Technology at ICMC-USP.

- 15h: Public lecture – “Why everything shouldn´t be left up to the algorithms.” (given in Portuguese). “Por que não dá para deixar tudo nas mãos dos algoritmos?" Prof. Dr. Chico Camargo (Post-doctoratal researcher in Data Science at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, United Kingdom).

- 17h: Closing lecture – “Data quality in times of AI and Big Data” (given in Portuguese). A Qualidade dos Dados em Tempos de Inteligência Artificial e Big Data” Prof. Dr. Dalton Lopes Martins (Professor in Librarianship and Professor on the Postgraduate Programme in Information Science at the Faculty of Information Science, University of Brasilia (UnB) and on the Postgraduate Master´s Programme of Communication at the Faculty of Information and Communication at the Federal Unviersity of Goiás.
