The Postgraduate Program in Science, Technology and Society (PPGCTS, acronym in Portuguese) was created by the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in 2007, initially with just a Master´s course, which started in 2008. In 2012, the Doctorate program was approved, the activities of which started in 2013, gaining grade 4 from CAPES.

The aim of the PPGCTS/UFSCar is to prepare human resources for research, teaching and professional life in several areas that will benefit from the interdisciplinary convergence of knowledge from the STS field. More than 100 Master´s dissertations have been defended. The Program arose from the consolidated trajectory in research, teaching and knowledge and technology diffusion of a group of university lecturers firmly rooted in the institution, originating from several departments in UFSCar and from other national and international institutions.Among the themes researched are, for example, configurations capable of generating technological innovation, the benefits and risks in relation to sustainability, democratic control by society of science and technology policies, and the languages and communication of science.

Due to its innovative and interdisciplinary character, the PPGCTS attracts students originating from several branches of the Human and Social Sciences, the Exact Sciences, Biological and Health Sciences, as well as from the Arts. The curricular structure of the course encompasses classical and contemporary study of theories, methods and practises in Science, Technology and Society from an interdisciplinary perspective
